If you have driven on Ft Union Blvd in Cottonwood Heights, Utah you have undoubtedly driven by the Lone Star Taqueria. It is just west of 2300 East between Hillside tire and the bank on the corner and has the old station wagon with the shark fin and it is covered in bumper stickers. It has old cowboy boots on top of the fence post. When the weather is nice people sit eat outside on the fairly good size patio. The building is not much for high end ambiance which is why you know the food is killer. You can be all that and have a long line at lunch time.

The Lone Star Taqueria seems to be a family run place, with the owner having cousins and friends working there. They are a Tex Mex group. Put it this way, the food is sooo good Mexicans actually eat there.

My kids and I like to eat at the Cottonwood Cafe. It is located at 2577 Bengal Blvd.

It is a fun locally owned place that is open for breakfast and lunch.

Saturday gets the eclectic crowd, where the weekdays are the people getting breakfast before heading off for the day.

You have families, singles, couples, snowboarders or skate boarders depending on the time of year. Some of the younger crowd are dressed in case they see someone and some well… you can tell they just woke up.

Nice little local place for a ham and Swiss omelet and people watching.

To “Shave the World” according to the sign at “African Ice”. Insert your shilling into one of the three containers and you are helping to fund someone a loan to start a small business in Africa. Many of the participants are women in Africa trying to provide for their family by having a small businesses.

I called and asked Stacey if I could come in for a haircut? If you can be here in a half an hour she said.

I hurried over to Executive Stylist at Hillside Plaza. You walk in and it has a feel between a modern day salon and an old fashion barber shop. Sherm North the owner has been at the Hillside location for 32 years. Five of the people have been with him for over 20 years. Sherm says we are like a family here, including the fights. Stacey has only been there three years and she is considered the new kid on the block.

Well she cut my hair and I look the same but with shorter hair, I was hoping to be thinner.

My five year old son will only let Roberta cut his hair, Roberta who is Sherm’s daughter. So you see that Executive Stylist is just local families serving local families.

That’s one of the reason Cottonwood Heights was ranked by Money Magazine’s 2007 Top 100 Cities. We didn’t need a magazine to tell us.

You have seen his billboard on the corner of Highland Drive and Fort Union Blvd.

Jess Thomas the owner and creator of Boot Camp with Jess is a man that cares for you more than you know. Those that have been through his camp (including me) have a love and respect for Jesse that we probably weren’t expecting.

Your first week is absolutely brutal there is no slack, it certainly is a shock and awe. It isn’t till about the third or fourth week that you realize Instructor Thomas genuinely cares for you, your health and fitness. He also knows that unless you are pushed through it most people won’t do it.

His goal is to make you understand you can achieve things beyond your imagination and to teach you how to work out. When I go to the gym (not as often as I should) I know exactly what I need and want to do. I can go and get a meaningful workout in about thirty minutes.
